Brine Spreading Trials

Transport Scotland have promoted research into brine spreading, along with Highways England, through the National Winter Service Research Group (NWSRG). Three live trials were undertaken in the UK during the 2014/15 winter season.

The key objectives of the trials were to compare, for sodium chloride brine and pre-wetted salt:

• Salt losses after spreading;
• Effectiveness and longevity of precautionary treatments; and
• Effectiveness and accuracy of different methods for measuring salt spread.
